Are You Anti BSL or For Breed Specific Legislation

anti BSL

Pro or Anti BSL? All legislation starts somewhere. A crime, an act against humanity. It seems like every paper or news program these days runs a story about a dog (usually a Pit Bull) that has attacked or killed somebody. These stories are true and if it was your child, sister, friend, or dog that was the statistic in the scenario I guarantee rage would be just one of many emotions flowing through your veins.

The truth is any dog can bite or become aggressive under the right circumstances. We all know someone with a dog that is questionable. The dog that is a little too protective. The dog that lunges down the fence line growling as you cross the street with your dogs. The dog that jumps to the point of choking himself while you walk cautiously by. What if that dog was a German Shepherd? What if it's a Malamute? What if it was a Chihuahua? What if it was a Pit Bull? Do you respond differently depending on the breed?

Huskies are known as dogs with high prey drive. Not all huskies have high prey drive. Some huskies live with cats, small dogs, and get along great with children. Other huskies want to kill small animals at the drop of a hat. People thinking about getting a husky are always warned of their high prey drive. According to BSL that is potental to be banned (reaction of breed).

Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) suggests that dogs with higher potential to be aggressive (by criteria based on looks and breed, not individual personality) can be banned. Anti BSL suggests this a form of racism. Judging the race (or breed) and not the personality. What do you think? How would you feel if your dog of 5 years was suddenly banned? What would you do? What if you couldn't find a place to live because of the breed of dog you owned. What if your mortgagee wouldn't give you a loan or your agent turned down your house insurance because of your breed of dog?

Are there other solutions besides breed specific legislation?

Why BSL Is Not Fair  When I watch the news and see dog attacks from Pitbulls and Rottweilers, I feel somewhat angered. However, I am not angered at the dog; but angered ...
