My philosophy follows that all dogs are individuals, even within the same breed. I approach training on that individual level. My goal for each dog is to have them become a delightful member of your family. I use positive reinforcement training methods. These methods are a mine field for misinformation. While some positive reinforcement training includes using food and clickers, these things only scratch the surface of training. Without a solid understanding of learning theory, food and clickers can be useless. Some of my clients want to know the theory behind what I am teaching them, and some just want me to train their dog. I am always happy to answer questions about what reinforcement training is and what it isn't.

About The Gentle Canine My name is Kirsten and I grew up training and riding horses. That love of training naturally led to the training of dogs. During my 30's, I went to Alaska to learn about mushing, skijoring, and sled dogs. I ran a pet sitting business in Alaska which often included taking care of hundreds (yes hundreds) of dogs during a single week. I spent several years as a Veterinary Technician both in emergency and regular practice. I volunteered my time as a Veterinary Technician for dog mushing races and as a spay/neuter technician for rescue groups. I worked at an animal shelter evaluating all shapes, breeds, and sizes of dogs and volunteered my time to work with rescued sled dogs. I co-supervised a dog daycare and have been a consultant for start-up dog daycare businesses.

My true calling is dog training. I spend hours reading and evaluating training theories, taking classes, and attending seminars. I can spend all day talking about behavior analysis and positive reinforcement theory. You will notice this website focuses on huskies, don't be put off by this, it's simply my personal niche for dogs. All dog training and theory requires the same approach regardless of breed. There are many differences between breeds of course, but those differences rarely affect how I approach training. As I stated above, I treat dogs as individuals.
