Why BSL Is Not Fair

by Shelby
(Sewell, NJ)

When I watch the news and see dog attacks from Pitbulls and Rottweilers, I feel somewhat angered. However, I am not angered at the dog; but angered at the owners.

Although Pitbulls and Rottweilers are notoriously vicious dog breeds, they are only that way because people train them that way. Both breeds are actually very sweet dogs, if raised properly. I know several people who own Pittbulls as well as Rottweilers, and they've actually rather mellow dogs.

Most of the stories you would see broad casted on the news are from Pitbulls who were trained to fight, or Rottweilers who were meant to be guard dogs broke loose. There's a few small details they fail to tell you. They usually won't blame the owners, just say how horrible the dog is for mauling said person/child. The truth is, the dog is really only as good as its owner.

I believe that BSL is very unfair because they judge the entire breed of these dogs, rather than perhaps suspecting that they were under bad care or were being used specifically for guard purposes. They assume all dogs in that breed are vicious, when really it all comes down to two things: The owner, and if they were bred for fighting.

Overall, I do not believe that they have the right to ban these breeds entirely, or any "vicious" dog breeds. A better alternative would be to do a background check on the person before allowing them to adopt a dog from an "aggressive" breed. Or, alternatively, make it so that people need a license before being able to adopt certain breeds.
